New Concentration

Nearly 20% of the gross domestic product in the United Statesis accounted for by the healthcare sector of the economy. Healthcare administrators are necessary for the successful management of medical organizations such as hospitals and adult homes as well as the development of policy in the industry.

According to John P. Davanso, the Senior Vice President, Regional Development of Catholic Health Systems, "Catholic Health, a faith-based health care network serving Western New York and Niagara University's graduate school of business have collaborated on the development of a new health administration MBA program set to launch in the fall of 2009. Catholic Health executives, representing the health system's hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, primary care centers and continuing care services, have helped Niagara University Faculty design an MBA curriculum which offers a special concentration in health care administration. Courses will include topical studies on strategic, financial and public policy issues in health care delivery. In addition to classroom studies, the students will participate in experiential learning opportunities with Catholic Health executives including, field placement, mentoring and practicum in a variety of health care settings.

Interested in Healthcare Administration?

The MBA with a concentration in healthcare administration is right for you.

This MBA concentration provides you with a rigorous and in-depth understanding of managerial science with practical and strategic applications in the healthcare industry.

Learn from experts in the area and lead the transformation of healthcare in our communities.

Gain hands-on experience with our internship MBA Co-op in healthcare organizations or travel to Jamaica and other countries to work with healthcare professions in the field.

Be the catalyst of change in the healthcare industry.

Here are the three proposed concentration classes and their description:

MPH 663 Management and Policy in Healthcare Organizations

This course examines the legislative process and patterns of health legislations. Students analyze the issues and political processes involved in the current health legislation and health legislative proposals at the national and state levels. Upon completion, students will develop an in-depth understanding of the persistent issues facing the healthcare system, the law and its application to the industry, and be able to think critically about current and future issues in healthcare management.

MPH 664 Financial and Managerial Accounting in Healthcare Organizations

Healthcare institutions, both profit and not-for-profit are under significant pressure to contain costs and improve the quality of services and products. Today's complex environment places greater emphasis on the financial implications of both managerial and clinical decisions. This course is intended to provide students with an understanding of the principles and theory of both managerial accounting and financial management in healthcare organizations. Upon completion, students will also have a good overview of the current and historical healthcare financial issues.

MPH 668 Strategic Management in Healthcare Organizations

This course integrates theory in business administration and healthcare administration using the strategic management framework. Students completing this course will have an ability to evaluate the strategic planning options and processes that healthcare organizations must employ to insure viability and success as they adapt to the changes in the environmental, regulatory and competitive healthcare industry, determine the impact of health policy on the strategic planning and management process of healthcare organizations and analyze the management of providing effective services in a healthcare delivery system with limited resources. Principles and methods of strategic planning in the healthcare environment will be addressed through readings, cases, and research.

Study Abroad in China with MGT 682 Business In China

THE COURSE:

China, with its enormous population and expanding economy, represents staggering potential business opportunities for firms. Understanding the market as well as developing and implementing a successful business strategy for the Chinese market calls for an accurate, pragmatic understanding of the complexities of the Chinese business. This course follows a planned sequence of text book readings, journal articles, case studies, videos, and podcasts to develop a framework for understanding the Chinese business environment. As part of the course, groups of students will produce several market studies in key industrial sectors. These studies will evaluate the potential for business success in China. This course is the preparation for the trip to China. The course is being offered Saturdays during Session II of the spring 2010 semester.

THE CURRICULUM:

This class can be used as a substitution for any ONE concentration class. However, if you have already used the MBA Co-op or study abroad as a substitution, you will not be able to use this substitution in your concentration. Accounting students wishing to take the CPA exam will need to consult with Professor Oddo to ensure that the CPA requirements are met. Healthcare Concentration students will not be able to substitute any of their concentration classes.

THE TRIP:

The trip is 12-14 days with the start date on May 29. We will visit about 20 companies in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Students are encouraged to bring their business cards and resumes for networking purposes. There will be some scheduled free time to tour the cities. Only students who have taken MGT 682 Business in China will be eligible to go on the China study abroad trip.

NU Tech Transfer Class 2010

Attention MBA Students. Are you interested in getting involved with a business that is looking to commercialize a new technology? If so, you may be interested in Niagara University’s College of Business Technology Transfer Center(the Center).

What is the Center?

The Technology Transfer Center was formed in the Fall of 2008 and was made possible by an initial grant of $25,000 from the New York State Office of Technology and Research (NYSTAR). Niagara University is one of four universities in New York receiving funding. The lead institution is Syracuse University’s Law School. The other partners include the Rochester Institute of Technology and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. While Syracuse is the lead and administers funding, each university works largely independently.

Objectives

The objectives of the Center are to provide MBA students the opportunity to work with an actual business in their efforts to commercialize a new technology and/or to explore new applications of existing technology. One can think of the goal as turning patents into profits or going from concept to commercial viability. In the Center we work with an established or newly formed business (large or small) that has access to a new technology, product, or process and is exploring ways to commercialize the technology. The participating business may be large or small and located anywhere in the world. A student research team will work directly with the senior management of the target firm and develop strategies to commercialize a new technology. The technology may have been created by the firm or the firm may have access or license rights to use the product or technology. The end result for the business is to create a viable market and successful business venture around the new technology. Our inaugural team completed their report (May 2009) for Niagara University’s Dr. Mary McCourt, owner of MMC BioLipids exploring ways to commercialize cholestosome technology. The technology may hold promise for drug delivery systems for cancer treatments. The technology currently has a patent pending.

A good deal of work will be required of each student. We estimate that each student will provide 10 – 15 hours per week of research time and work closely with team members. Over the course of two semesters- fall 2010 and spring 2011 our goal is to furnish 1500 to 3000 hours of research time to the target firm.

Student Benefits

What is the benefit to the student for participating in the Center’s program? Students that participate in the program earn six graduate credit hours over an academic year(three credits in the Fall semester and three credits in the Spring semester); get hands on, real world experience with commercializing a new technology; have a great “resume builder” and enhance your employment prospects; and, may be a candidate for consideration by the firm for future employment opportunities. Students are NOT paid for their time. The ideal team size is five students. If more than five students are interested and qualify two teams may be formed as long as we have enough viable projects.

How is Credit Earned

Students selected for the program earn six credit hours:

MGT 682 Independent Study-Research-Fall-three credits

MGT 691 Business Strategy and Research-Spring-three credits. MGT 691 is a required course of all MBA students. Center research team students will take 691 in a “non-traditional” manner and will learn all elements of the capstone strategy course but content will be structured to incorporate the research related to their project.

As part of the MGT 682 independent study the student research team will have the opportunity to attend lectures by venture capitalists, patent attorneys and other outside experts that specialize in commercializing and financing new technologies and building innovative capacities in firms.

Student Requirements

Students interested in being a member of the Center’s research team must meet the following criteria:

Be able to provide 10 - 15hours each week for each 15 week semester-the total for each student member of a team is a minimum of 300 hours over the academic year

Have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Be very knowledgeable of technical search engines and competent in on-line and library searches(i.e. Ingenta, ProQuest, EBSCO Host, Lexis Nexus, etc.)

Be a solid team player and also be able to work independently

Be able to meet on campus at least once each week for a total of one and a half to two hours each week

Be technologically savvy-experience in shared data base and work sites such as Share Point is very desirable

Be able to work at times, in unstructured environments…for example-since most students are not likely to be skilled in the technology of our target firm this is in part “a roll up the sleeves and explore process.”

Be a high energy individual and persistent!

Have excellent written and oral communication skills.

10. Be focused on a successful outcome!

Please call or write if you have an interest in participating in this project or if you have any questions. Furthermore, I will be available to meet with interested students during the MBA new student orientation on Tuesday August 3rd.

Dr. Stephen F. Mayer, P.E., Center Director

NU Alum Michael Chatfield Wins National Advertising Award

Michael Chatfield, who earned a B.S. (2005) and M.B.A. (2006) from Niagara University, was named the sole recipient of the prestigious “Pick of the Litter” award at the 2010 Jay Chiat Strategy Festival, which was held in Miami, Fla. on Oct. 11, 2010. Presented by Miami Ad School and sponsored by the American Association of Advertising Agencies (a.k.a. the 4 A’s), this award recognizes account planners with less than three years of strategy experience.

Chatfield, an account planner at the Rochester-based advertising agency Partners + Napier, was selected based on a case study he submitted for www.kodakmoments.com, a digital platform that creates a unique visual way for users to explore the emotional context of sharing. This idea was based on the insight that people everywhere crave affirmation and a sense of belonging, and that sharing pictures helps to achieve this.

“Michael has always been an exceptional student and human being and, nowadays, is a tremendous resource for current Niagara University students,” said Dr. Peggy Choong, who was Chatfield’s marketing instructor for three courses during his undergraduate and graduate tenures at Niagara. “He has been back to the university to teach a class in a volunteer capacity and received amazing feedback from the students.”

“Dr. Choong inspired me to pursue a career in advertising, and fueled my interest in studying consumer behavior,” commented Chatfield, who maintains communication with Dr. Choong to this day. “Under the leadership of mentors such as Dr. Choong, I was able to grow as a marketer, gain a better understanding of people, and learn about myself, all three of which are critical to success in account planning. I can testify that Niagara University truly delivers upon its brand promise of ‘education that makes a difference.’”

As winner of “Pick of the Litter,” Chatfield, who joined Partners + Napier in May 2007, was presented with a check for $2,500 by Pippa Seichrist, president of the Miami Ad School and an award sponsor.

Niagara University, Keuka College Announce 4+1 MBA Agreement

Niagara University and Keuka College recently signed an agreement that grants Keuka business graduates admission into Niagara’s one-year Master of Business Administration program.

Graduates of Keuka College who have completed the foundation courses and meet the prescribed admission standards will be considered for admission to the Niagara University program. The plan offers graduates an opportunity to plan their academic program carefully and take advantage of the experience afforded by full-time study for the MBA degree.

After five years of college study, the graduate will have obtained both an undergraduate degree from Keuka College and a MBA from Niagara University.

“This is an exceptional opportunity for students seeking to attain an accredited MBA in the shortest possible timeframe,” said Carlos E. Tejada, associate dean for graduate recruitment at Niagara University. “We are looking forward to developing a partnership that will benefit both academic institutions but, most importantly, that will assist students who may not have had the resources to further their business studies.”

For more information, please contact Carlos Tejada in Niagara University’s admissions office at 716-286-8769 or ctejada@niagara.edu.

NU Economics Professor Appointed Prime Minister of Somalia

When Dr. Abdiweli Ali, an Associate Professor of Economics, was appointed to be Somalia's Minister of Planning and International Cooperation last fall, he took a sabbatical from NU for the spring 2011 semester. It is now comfirmed that Dr. Ali's stay in the African nation will extend into a yearlong leave of absence as he was named Somalia's Prime Minister on June 23, 2011, following the removal of Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.

"We wish Dr. Ali the best of luck in his new position," said Dr. Mark Wilson, Dean of Niagara University's College of Business Administration. "Dr. Ali still plans to remain affiliated with Niagara University, which really speaks to his affinity for the school."

Somalian President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed has charged Dr. Ali, a Somali-American, with governing a country wrecked by war that has been virtually lawless for 20 years. Adding to that challenge is the fact that the mandates of Somalia's transitional institutions expire in 14 months, at which time a new administration will be elected.

"He has the personality and the kind of knowledge that makes him fit to become the prime minister," Ahmed told the Associated Press in announcing Dr. Ali's appointment. "I'm quite confident that he will be up to the challenge of the hard conditions our country is encountering."

Dr. Ali holds a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, a Certificate of Taxation from Harvard Law School, and a Master of Economics from Vanderbilt University. He completed his Ph.D. in Economics at George Mason University and, in 1998 and 1999, was a Joel Leff Fellow of Political Economy at Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University. Before coming to Niagara, Dr. Ali was a Research and Forecast Manager for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Niagara University Maintains Prestigious AACSB International Accreditation

Niagara University’s College of Business Administration received notification this week that it has maintained its prestigious business accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. The college first received AACSB accreditation in 2001 and has continued to expand the quality of its teaching environment and curricula, while furthering its efforts to respond to the needs of local businesses.

“AACSB accreditation reaffirms that Niagara’s College of Business Administration is one of the premier business schools in the world, one that provides an excellent quality of education to its students,” remarked the Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., president of Niagara University. “This highest standard of achievement in business education has been made possible by the extraordinary leadership of Dean Mark Wilson and the faculty and staff of the college. It is also a testament to the remarkable support of the college’s alumni and friends.”

AACSB accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in business education and has been earned by less than 5 percent of the world's business schools. Today, there are 620 business schools in 38 countries that maintain AACSB accreditation.

“I am very proud of the college’s accomplishments and our AACSB accreditation validates the excellent work that the faculty and staff do to ensure the success of our students,” added Dr. Wilson, who has served as the college’s dean since 2008. “International accreditation to this standard enhances student recruitment, further elevates the high value of our graduates’ degrees and keeps the business school in elite company in higher education.”

AACSB’s accreditation includes both undergraduate and MBA programs in business. Niagara University’s College of Business Administration offers undergraduate degrees in accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing, as well as its highly-regarded master in business administration (MBA) program.

Achieving accreditation is a process of rigorous internal review, evaluation, and adjustment and can take several years to complete. During these years, the school develops and implements a plan to meet the AACSB accreditation standards.

“AACSB commends the faculty, deans, directors, and administrative staffs of Niagara University for their exemplary work in helping their college maintain the highest honor in business school accreditation” said John J. Fernandes, President and Chief Executive Officer of AACSB International. “We are pleased to send our congratulations to Niagara University for maintaining their accreditation.”

Founded in 1916, AACSB International is an association of more than 1,200 educational institutions, businesses and other organizations in 78 countries and territories. AACSB’s mission is to advance quality management education worldwide through accreditation, thought leadership, and value-added services. As the premier accrediting body for institutions offering undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate degrees in business and accounting, the association also conducts a wide array of conferences and seminar programs at locations throughout the world. AACSB’s global headquarters is located in Tampa, Fla., and its Asia headquarters is located in Singapore.

Symposium Attendees Learn About ‘Next Generation of Healthcare Service Delivery’

The first wintry day of 2012 in Western New York didn’t stop more than 160 individuals, representing 30 local organizations, from attending Friday’s sold out healthcare symposium at Niagara University.

“Exploring the Elements of the High Performing Health System: The Next Generation of Healthcare Service Delivery” was an opportunity for them to find out how organizations, like Catholic Health, are successfully navigating new regulations in healthcare reform.

Co-sponsored by Niagara University and Catholic Health, and endorsed by the Healthcare Executive Forum of WNY, the conference enlisted executives from Catholic Health to discuss how the nonprofit is leading the evolution of healthcare. Speakers also touched upon the new, Medicare/Medicaid-endorsed models of healthcare delivery that were piloted by the Centers for Medicare Services and are now being developed by Catholic Health.

The Rev. Joseph L. Levesque, C.M., president of Niagara University, welcomed participants, stating his pleasure that so many of the brightest minds in healthcare services and medical management braved the outdoor elements to attend the symposium. He also explained the close relationship between Niagara and Catholic Health, one that is grounded in a congruence of mission that embraces the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul.

“My enthusiasm and passion for this partnership is deeply rooted in our Vincentian nature as a university, in doing all that we can – all the time – to live as St. Vincent did, as the catalyst of hope for all of God’s people,” Father Levesque said. “At Niagara University, we say that our education makes a difference in the world and in our lives. Our collaboration with Catholic Health is another way that we fulfill this mission.”

Joe McDonald, president and CEO of Catholic Health and chair of the Board of Trustees of the Healthcare Association of New York State, echoed Father Levesque’s statements, and also provided a brief overview on the development of Catholic Health and the organizations that comprise its system of care. McDonald concluded by explaining the steps that the organization has taken in cooperation with Catholic Medical Partners, a group of over 900 physicians, who, in partnership with Catholic Health, design and direct the care models offered to patients.

The conference’s next presenter was Michael Edbauer, D.O., Catholic Medical Partners’ chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs for home care and primary care at Catholic Health. He addressed the evolution of Catholic Medical Partners in collaboration with Catholic Health to become a high performing health system. Edbauer’s discussed the conversion to electronic medical records, the implementation of standardized medical paths of care and the use of care coordinators in the physician’s office to enhance and control the cost of care for patients with chronic medical conditions.

James A. Dunlop Jr., Catholic Health CFO and executive vice president of finance, provided the audience with information on the financial aspects of a high performing health system, how the model is financed and what economic benefits it offers to the payers of healthcare, including federal and state governments, and private insurers such as BlueCross BlueShield, Health Now and United Health Care.

Finally, Michael Moley, Catholic Health’s senior vice president of human resources, discussed how the company has capitalized on its quality, delivery and cost model to develop a benefit plan being offered to Western New York employers at a significant cost savings.

Before breaking for lunch, Edbauer, Dunlop and Moley offered a panel discussion that was moderated by John Davanzo, a former executive at Catholic Health who now serves as a professor-in-residence in Niagara’s College of Business Administration.

Peggy Choong, Ph.D., an NU professor and AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) director of continuous improvement, served as the event’s master of ceremonies. The marketing expert repeatedly encouraged attendees to utilize Niagara students as interns and researchers, referencing the vast reciprocal benefits that the university and Catholic Health have enjoyed since forming a partnership.

The relationship began in 2009 when NU’s College of Business Administration and Catholic Health collaborated to form an initiative that prepares professionals for leadership positions in the healthcare industry. The partnership allows students in NU’s healthcare administration concentration to obtain real-world experience through field placements and mentorship opportunities within Catholic Health.

Beginning in spring 2012, Niagara University’s 4+1 BBA/MBA in professional accountancy program will be offering a new course. ACC 682, or C.P.A. Research, Practice and Strategy, is a three-credit hour course currently being held on Monday nights from 7:15 to 10 p.m. The prerequisite for the course is an undergraduate accounting degree (or its equivalent).

ACC 682 includes a comprehensive review of the advanced topics in auditing and attestation; the general business environment; regulation, including tax and business law; and financial accounting and reporting. It is intended for students with an undergraduate degree in accounting who plan to pursue a career in public accounting.

Students will be required to complete CPA excel modules, according to a rigorous schedule. CPAexcel is a software program that prepares candidates for the C.P.A. Exam. It was first delivered to C.P.A. Exam candidates in May 1998. Since then, students using CPA excel have consistently passed the C.P.A. Exam at exceptionally high rates. The focus of the class lectures will be research methods, contemporary accounting issues, and strategies on how to pass the CPA Exam.

The course will include a lab fee of $500 for matriculated students and $1,000 for non-matriculated students. This fee includes all materials required for the class and a license to use the CPAexcel preparation software from the start of class until the student passes all fours parts of the exam with no future upgrade fees (a $1,690 value). The course is currently being taught by five highly-regarded professors from Niagara’s Accounting Department: Drs. Lei Han and Shih-Jen Kathy Ho, and Professors Vincent Agnello, Christopher Aquino and James Ingham.

Passing the C.P.A. exam can be a very difficult challenge without adequate support in place. This class provides the software, guidance and strategy necessary to earn your C.P.A. designation.

Professor Aquino sums up the class by saying, “ACC682 offers our students the opportunity to draw together all that they have learned about accounting just before they embark on the challenge of conquering the C.P.A. Exam. In addition, it provides students with an efficient practice tool they can use until they pass all parts of the exam. This course has it all from guided instruction by some of our finest instructors and CPA excel access rights to the development of a well-structured strategy to pass the exam!"

This class has shown to be very popular so be sure to sign up early if you would like a seat the next time it is offered.
